The British Embassy, Amman is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual for the position of Press and Public Affairs and Chevening Officer, Grade – B3 (L).

 

Main Purpose of the job:

The candidate will be responsible for delivering a nationwide selection process to attract and select exceptional students to study in the UK for a year. Lead on all aspects of delivering the prestigious Chevening Scholarship Programme, convening panels to assess candidate applications, shortlist and conduct interviews and score applicants on evidence provided.

The role will also support the delivery of communication campaigns set by UK FCDO, MENA Regional Hub and British Embassy Amman strategy and country business plan.  The aim is to inform external audiences about the Embassy’s work whilst supporting the objectives of both the Embassy as a whole and the individual Sections. Act as a first point of contact for local Jordanian media, maximising opportunities for positive coverage of the UK and Embassy activity in Jordan/the region.

Main Responsibilities:

Chevening (50% of the role):

  • Lead on a recruitment campaign and assess applications from prospective students who wish to apply for a scholarship to study in the UK. Work with various teams across the embassy to form sifting panels to review and score applications.
  • Organise Chevening events including a Welcome Home event Feb 2022 and Farewell event in July.
  • Identify sponsors in Jordan to deliver co-funded scholarships, negotiate and deliver partnership contracts.
  • Contribute to development of regional and global Chevening networks, learn from other countries and identify areas for collaboration.
  • Work with teams and senior leadership across the Embassy to identify how they can engage with Chevening, and identify opportunities to promote Chevening through network events.
  • Maintain and update the Chevening communications and marketing strategy.

External Communications (50% of the role):

  • Deliver social media aspects of the Embassy and FCDO communications strategy, supporting the Embassy’s online presence: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and maintain the GOV.UK pages of website.
  • Provide administrative and planning support to the Head of Communications as required, including development of communication plans for campaigns.
  • Maintain listening aspects on social media, following key accounts and engaging on positives posts supporting our campaigns and business objectives.
  • Support campaigns by researching, gathering insights and reaching out to influencers for support on campaigns.
  • Participate in brainstorming, forward planning and active reporting, monitoring and evaluation of social media.
  • Maintain regular and proactive contact with key TV, radio and newspaper outlets in Jordan and building up a good contact base with them.
  • Issue Embassy and FCDO press releases and follow up with news outlets as required to maximise positive coverage of the UK/Embassy activity in local media.
  • Collate top political headlines and circulate daily press summary by 0830 to staff.
  • Manage one intern who will support the Communications Team with administration tasks.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills as well as being a strong team player with partnering skills with a diverse range of customers.  This is a high-paced role and you will need to be resilient in order to deliver high standards of service in a challenging but rewarding environment.  We are looking for someone that can demonstrate:

Essential:

  • Fluent communication skills in English and Arabic (both spoken and written).
  • More than two (2) years’ experience in a communications, education or management position.
  • A Bachelors or other professional qualification in a related field.
  • Exceptional writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong organisation skills and experience of managing events.
  • Comfortable with advising, supporting and drafting for senior leaders.

Desirable:

  • Exposure to media work or journalism
  • Experience in recruitment and selection processes
  • Self-starter, comfortable with strategy and delivery with minimal support
  • Graphic design skills, including videography
  • MS Office, 0365 applications
  • Manage interviews and selection processes for candidates with future leadership potential.

Working Hours and Remuneration:

The position is full-time, at 37 hours a week with considerations of flexibility depending on circumstances.

Pay is on the Embassy B3 (L) scale, with a salary of JOD 1,613 per month. Please note that your salary will be paid gross and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities.  If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax.  Further information on this will be given to candidates at interview if necessary.

This position is offered on a full time, fixed term contract for six (6) months. The assumed/desired start date for the successful candidate is 15th January 2022 and ending on 15th July 2022.

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-days probationary period (as appropriate). The selected candidate will have the right to live and work in Jordan.

The package includes a good level of health insurance and a friendly, English-speaking work environment. We offer opportunities to develop professional skills through our Learning & Development offer. Leave entitlement is 25 days (on pro rata basis) plus 14 public holidays.
