The UK Mission to the United Nations (UN) & World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva represents the interests and policies of the UK at the UN. Its Migration and Protracted Crisis Team is recruiting two highly motivated and skilled Humanitarian and Migration Interns.
Working in the Mission’s Humanitarian and Migration Team, the Humanitarian and Migration Interns will work under the supervision and guidance of the First Secretary and Second Secretary Humanitarian and Migration respectively. They will participate in the Mission’s multilateral work as an integral part of the UK Mission to the UN, supporting delivery of the UK’s objectives for UN Reform and the UK Government’s humanitarian migration policy goals.
These internships are an opportunity to acquire insight into and front-line experience of the work of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. They will also provide the interns with a detailed picture of the humanitarian architecture and/or forced displacement and migration system and the current debates and developments in humanitarian policy and/or forced displacement and migration affairs (UN Reform, UNHCR, IOM, IFRC, ICRC, Global Compact for Migration, Global Compact on Refugees, IASC , International Dialogue on Migration, Climate mobility, etc.).
Subject to the expertise and interests of the successful candidates, one intern will be asked to focus in particular on the humanitarian side of the team’s work, and the other intern to focus in particular on the forced displacement / migration side of the team.

This is a full-time 11-month internship (with a 3-month probation period).
The UK Mission pays a monthly training allowance of 1,450 CHF. Please note that interns will need to arrange and pay for their own travel and accommodation, as well as any other living costs and may be subject to local tax & social charges, depending on their personal circumstances are subject to Swiss taxes. All interns can claim back from the Mission the cost of a standard monthly Geneva travel card.
Where applicable, we strongly recommend successful applicants (if from Europe or the UK) to obtain a Health Insurance Card (EHIC or GHIC) prior to entering Switzerland.
Any non-Swiss national recruited as an intern are advised to apply for private travel insurance (covering medical care in Switzerland) and asked to provide proof thereof before starting their internship. All interns can claim back up to £250 from the Mission for the cost of health insurance for the duration of their internship. Those who have an EHIC/GHIC card can rely on that for any medical emergencies whilst in Switzerland.
Applicants that have the right to live and work in Geneva and don’t require a visa sponsorship are: Nationals from United Kingdom, European Union and EFTA, along with Nationals of: Brunei Darussalam, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Principality of Andorra, Principality of Monaco, San Marino, Singapore and Vatican – these applicants are eligible to live and work in Switzerland as long as holding a full passport valid for at least 12 months.
All other applicants need to have permission to live and work in Switzerland.
The final appointment and commencement of internship will be dependent upon successful security clearance.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Switzerland and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
